How well do you know your electrical service box? It’s an essential part of your home, and the condition of your electrical box can influence the Philadelphia insurance premiums you pay for home insurance coverage. Don’t wait until there is an electrical emergency in your home to start looking for the box, get familiar with it now!

Your home’s electrical service box is a box attached to the external wall of the house. Electrical supply comes in from the utility and is distributed by the electrical service box throughout your home. The circuits for different parts of the house have different power ratings, such as 15 amps or 20 amps, depending on the electrical demand and appliances being served.

Having located your electrical service box, get to know how to turn off individual circuits or the whole service. Each circuit breaker, switch, or fuse should be clearly labeled and you should familiarize yourself with their on/off positions.

Look at the general condition of your electrical installation. Have it assessed by a licensed electrical contractor if there are signs of corrosion, wear, or damage, or if it simply looks old-fashioned. An electrical contractor may recommend repairs or even upgrading your electrical installation. Upgrading an outdated electrical installation to bring it up to modern standards may qualify you for discounted home insurance premiums and reduce the cost of your Philadelphia insurance!
